Jan. 4, 1967: Although Dallas Fullback Don Perkins has not yet decided whether he will accept a position with the state, Gov. David F. Cargo — in the presence of newsmen — asked the grid star to be a member of his state house basketball team.

“What’s all this about basketball?” Perkins asked the Governor.

“We’ve been challenged to a basketball game by the press,” Cargo answered.

Perkins cautiously surveyed the news media representatives present in the Governor’s office, smiled, and said, “It doesn’t look like they’d be too much trouble.”

Jan. 4, 1992: Five bills proposing boundary changes to several state Senate districts were introduced Friday as the Legislature convened for a special session to address federal government objections to a Senate redistricting plan adopted in September.

Legislators adopted a $197,000 budget to pay their expenses during the session, which is predicted to last three to five days.
