BEVERLY, Mass. (AP) — Police say a Beverly woman who first said she had been kidnapped and locked in the trunk of her car now says she made up the story.

Beverly Police Chief Mark Ray told The Salem News ( the 24-year-old told detectives she was worried she might be arrested for drunken driving. Ray said the woman could be charged with filing a false police report.

Police said passing motorists who thought there had been an accident found her locked in the trunk of her car on Route 128 in Wenham at about 3:30 a.m. Monday. They had helped free her by the time police arrived.

The woman first told police she'd been abducted from her home in Beverly by two men who ordered her to drive her car, then forced her to pull over on the highway.
