BGSU men lose in South Dakota
VERMILLION, S.D. — Bowling Green’s men’s basketball team saw a late lead slip away in a 78-72 loss to South Dakota Sunday in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
The Falcons led 67-62 with 5:17 left but were outscored 16-5 the rest of the way as they fell to 0-2.
Rasheed Worrell led Bowling Green with 15 points, while Wes Alcegaire had 12 and Ismail Ali had 11.
“We played hard at times. We didn’t play hard consistently. That was the difference in the game,” said Bowling Green coach Michael Huger.
“Our guys, right now, we’re thinking offense too much. We’ve got to take care of the defensive end. We have to get better as a team on the defensive end and we have to better our intensity.”
Trey Burch-Manning led South Dakota (2-0) with 14 points and Carlton Hurst had 13. Tyler Flack had 12 points and Trey Dickerson added 10.
At 7-2 run by South Dakota erased Bowling Green’s five-point lead to tie the game at 69 with 2:56 to play.
It was tied again at 71 with 1:35 left when a foul by Alcegaire led to a pair of South Dakota free throws. Wiggins committed a foul 33 seconds later leading to two more free throws and a 75-71 South Dakota lead with 32 seconds left.
Ali’s free throw with 28 seconds to go made it 75-72 but the Falcons missed a layup after two misses at the line by South Dakota, spelling the end.
South Dakota was 24-of-33 from the free-throw line, and Bowling Green was 14-of-18.
“We won pretty much every category. ... Free throws is where they got us,” Huger said. “That’s a big disparity. My main thing is just being consistent in the way you call the fouls.
“it’s a learning experience for our guys. No matter what happens we’ve got to be able to play through anything. ... We’ve got to find a way to win the game.”
Bowling Green shot 26-of-72 (36.1 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-18 from 3-point range.
