HUNTINGTON — The unexpected blast that echoed through Huntington’s West End on Friday afternoon was no cause for alarm.

But it did set off a cascade of excited smiles and laughs from students at Grace Christian School.

The school was treated to an expo of Civil Warera weaponry in the closing hours of the school day as Chapman’s Battery, a local re-enactment troupe, wheeled out its cannon. The inert blast rocketed a plume of smoke along West 5th Avenue, followed by firing of 19th century small arms.

The showcase was the highlight of an in-school presentation on the Civil War era.
