Scaled back sales tax holiday returns to Florida
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida parents shopping for the new school year are getting a slimmed down back-to-school tax holiday.
The tax holiday kicks off Friday at 12:01 a.m. and will last the entire weekend. Three years ago, the back-to-school tax holiday lasted 10 days.
Shoppers won’t have to pay state or local sales taxes on clothes worth $60 or less and on school supplies worth $15 or less. In 2014 and 2015, shoppers could buy clothing worth up to $100 without paying taxes.
Legislators this year also eliminated a tax break for computers and computer related accessories. Last year, consumers were allowed to avoid paying sales tax on computers costing $750 or less.
Florida’s statewide sales tax is 6 percent, although some cities and counties charge more.
