IN THE NEWS: FACEBOOK EXECS SUMMONED TO CANADA
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Next time Facebook executives Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg are in Canada, lawmakers up north have something for them: a summons. Lawmakers have voted to compel Zuckerberg and Sandberg to appear before parliament. The summons comes after the two failed to appear before a Canadian committee on big data, privacy and democracy being hosted by parliament this week. The panel of international politicians is examining the role of tech giants in protecting privacy and democratic rights. One lawmaker says the failure of Zuckerberg and Sandberg to show up is a sign of disrespect to legislators around the world.
IN THE NEWS: HUAWEI CHALLENGES SALES BANS IN U.S.
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — The latest battle between the U.S. and Chinese tech giant Huawei (WAH’-way) is being waged in court. Huawei has filed a motion challenging the constitutionality of a law that limits its sales of telecom equipment. At a press briefing in China today, the company’s chief legal officer said Huawei has filed a motion for summary judgment. It asks the court to rule on whether it’s constitutional for the U.S. to use a military spending provision that bars the government and its contractors from using Huawei gear. Huawei is the biggest global maker of network equipment. But the U.S. claims Huawei’s products threaten international cybersecurity.
ON THE WEB: CANADIAN MARKET SUSPECTED OF SELLING COUNTERFEITS TARGETED
CYBERSPACE (AP) —Canadian authorities say eight people are facing charges following a police raid on a Toronto-area mall that U.S. officials call a “notorious market’” for counterfeit luxury goods. Officials say police acted after getting an increase in tips from the public about goods being sold at the Pacific Mall. Last year, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative listed the mall as a place where the sale of bogus goods proliferated. The Pacific Mall is the largest Chinese shopping center in the Western world.
