New NATO Navy Commander
NAPLES, Italy (AP) _ U.S. Adm. James B. Busey assumed command Monday of Allied Forces Southern Europe and U.S. Naval Forces Europe.
Busey, 54, a native of Peoria, Ill., succeeds U.S. Adm. Arthur S. Moreau Jr., who died of a heart attack in Naples last December.
Busey heads the largest NATO regional command in Europe, responsible for land and air defense of Italy, Greece and Turkey and defense of sea lanes throughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
He also is in charge of all U.S. Navy ships, stations and most naval personnel in Europe.
Busey, who joined the Navy in 1952, was formerly vice chief of naval operations in Washington.
