BPD kicks off annual toy drive
Two Brownsville police officers on Segways with flashing sirens escorted Blue Santa to his first appearance of the year Thursday morning in the parking lot of the Walmart on Boca Chica Boulevard.
Blue Santa’s arrival kicks off the Brownsville Police Department’s annual Christmas for Kids campaign.
Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez, flanked by smiling Walmart staffers and Christmas trees, along with a pile of toys, said the toy drive makes a difference for children in the community who might not otherwise receive a visit from old Saint Nick.
“We’re going to make Christmas possible for so many kids this year,” Rodriguez said.
This is Walmart’s first year hosting the police department’s Christmas for Kids campaign. Assistant Store Manager Victor Bravo said his staff has set up a donation center and asked community members to drop off new, unwrapped, child-friendly toys.
“We’re excited to be a part of it, and we thank our customers for coming to our store,” Bravo said.
Also, there are toy drive donation dropoffs at the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Gatti’s and Printa Image.
