Be thoughtful with your comments

February 11, 2018 GMT

It happens to everyone -- you make a comment that you didn’t think was offensive at the time, but looking back, you can see that the words hurt. When it comes to families with autism, there are phrases that are often hurtful because of the situations they are in. Families of children with autism sometimes hear statements like:

“Your kid acts so crazy.”

“Your kid really could use some discipline.”

“Is he still not potty trained?”

When asked what your goals are for your child’s progress, responding with, “I guess you can shoot for the stars.”

While they may not be intended to hurt, they often do. Be thoughtful, hopeful and positive with comments.
