Trump Uses Immigrants As Political Pawns
Moments after the White House officially denied that it had entertained a proposal to release detained immigrants in “sanctuary cities,” President Donald Trump declared that he still is thinking about it. The proposal is vile in its own right because it treats thousands of displaced human beings as a mere commodity. Beyond that, it illuminates that Trump has no immigration policy, and that he views the entire matters only in terms of political advantage rather than as a humanitarian issue. Sanctuary cities are those that do not cooperate in immigration enforcement. Mostly large cities with Democratic governments, sanctuary city mayors and police officials contend that acting as extensions of the federal immigration agencies would hinder law enforcement. Crime victims or witnesses in the country illegally would not cooperate with police in preventing and solving violent crimes if doing so carried the risk of detention and deportation. And Trump demands local police immigration enforcement without covering the local governments’ costs in doing so. By his willingness to use immigrants as mere political pawns, Trump yet again has diminished the presidency.
