University of Nebraska system’s CFO takes new job in Florida

December 26, 2017

The University of Nebraska system’s chief financial officer has accepted a job with the University of South Florida system.

Dave Lechner has been CFO for more than 18 years. He also has the title of senior vice president for business and finance.

NU President Hank Bounds announced late last week to colleagues that Lechner’s last day will be Jan. 19. Lechner has worked out of Varner Hall in Lincoln.

Lechner will be the senior vice president for business and financial strategy for the Tampa-based system.

Bounds credited Lechner with managing the finance of student housing, student unions, rec centers, parking structures, stadium additions and academic buildings totaling $1.8 billion.

Lechner also helped NU maintain an Aa1 bond rating and helped head NU’s legislative and budget strategies, Bounds said, and saw to it that NU’s health plan had no increases in eight of the past 10 years.

The NU system includes institutions in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Curtis.

Bounds said Lechner kept NU “in excellent fiscal health while leading us through a period of remarkable growth and change.”

Chris Kabourek will serve as interim CFO. Kabourek, a longtime administrator of the NU system, is director of budget and planning.
