Girls basketball roundup: St. Francis uses big 1st quarter to beat Howells-Dodge
HUMPHREY — Class D-2, No. 3 Humphrey St. Francis rolled from the opening tip Friday in a 60-44 home win over Howells-Dodge.
The Flyers (12-0) scored 27 points in the first quarter and never looked back.
Telegram Super Senior Logan Wemhoff led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Allison Weidner also posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 assists.
St. Francis led by 15 points after the first quarter and 34-22 at halftime. The Jaguars (5-6) never threatened in the second half.
The Flyers play Saturday at Burwell before hosting Class C-1 Pierce on Thursday.
Twin River 49,
David City 37
GENOA — Twin River had to withstand a furious third-quarter rally by David City, but pulled away in the fourth quarter Friday for a 49-37 home win over the Scouts.
The Titans (8-3) dominated the first half, leading 15-6 after eight minutes of play and 29-11 at the break. But David City (3-7) came roaring back in the third quarter, outscoring Twin River 18-5, and only trailed 34-29 going into the fourth quarter.
The Titans managed to hold on late.
Halle Konz scored a game-high 19 points for Twin River while Cali Shanle and Gabi Weick added 11 points apiece.
Macy Svoboda led David City with 14 points and Chaquoya Givens added 12.
The Titans play Saturday at Madison before hosting David City Aquinas on Tuesday. The Scouts host Milford on Saturday then travel Tuesday to Raymond Central.
