Strasburg named Offensive POY, six named first team

November 4, 2016

The Fort Atkinson High School football team had 14 players given Badger South All-Conference awards this season, with senior running back Preston Strasburg highlighting the honors.

Strasburg was named the Offensive Player of the Year, and was a unanimous first-team All-Conference pick. The senior ended the year leading the State in rushing yards with 2,054, and is ranked sixth in touchdowns with 28. His 186.7 rushing-yards per game ranks fourth in the State as well.

Joining Strasburg on the offensive first team are seniors Jared Edwards and Drew Hoye.

Edwards caught 57 passes for a total of 666 yards and had nine touchdowns. He capped off the final game of his career against Monroe with 12 catches for three touchdowns and 209 yards.

Hoye was one of two offensive tackles named, and for most parts of the season, looked like a man amongst boys. He led an experienced offensive line that is given major credit to the success of the Fort Atkinson run game.

Fort had another offensive lineman in Cory Schroeder named to the second team. Schroeder, just a junior guard, will be a key returner for Fort next season.

Senior quarterback Matt Romens garnered a second-team nod as well. Romens went 126-for-227 on the year, throwing for 1,690 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also was the second leading rusher for Fort, with 261 yards on 27 attempts, and four touchdowns.

Senior tight end JoJo Crandall, tackle Riley Walter and center Kyle Beggs were given honorable mentions, along with junior wide receiver Connor O’Brien, who had 29 receptions for 470 yards and six touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Fort had three players named to the first team.

The Blackhawks leading tackler Mason Emrick earned first-team for his play at the linebacker spot. Emrick had 40 solo tackles, 15 more than any Fort player, and had 114 total tackles on the season. He added a sack and, two tackles for loss, and one interception.

Leading Fort in sacks with 2.5, is junior Troy Nachtigal, who was named a first team edge player. Nachtigal had 50 total tackles and four tackles for loss.

Senior defensive back Cole Nelson rounds out the first teamers for Fort. Nelson had two interceptions, tying for a team-high, to go along with 56 total tackles.

The other player tied for interceptions was senior safety Seth Foerster, who was the only Fort player named to the second team. Foerster ranked third in tackles with 74 total, and 25 solo to go along with his two interceptions.

Linebacker Mason Kent (82 tackles, 25 solo) was given honorable mention, as was Romens for his punting duties. Romens had seven punts on the season, and his 45.6 yards per punt is ranked first in the State.
