Fairland Basketball Academy makes successful debut

Young athletes take to the court at Fairland Middle School as they compete in youth basketball games on Saturday in Proctorville.

ROME TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The name has changed, but the results are the same.

The Fairland Girls Buddy Basketball League was renamed Fairland Basketball Academy this season and the circuit appears to be as strong as ever. One of the larger girls basketball leagues in the Tri-State, the program has three divisions for players in grades one through six. Players practice twice a week and play on Saturdays at Fairland Middle School.

Practice sessions emphasize skill workouts for individual improvement. Coaches stress ball handling, passing, shooting, defending, rebounding and thinking. The league is operated by Fairland High School girls coach Jon Buchanan and is, as was the Fairland Girls Buddy League, open to players from throughout the region.

“I hope we get tons of kids from all different schools who want to grow their game and allow us to help,” Buchanan said.
