Trial set for New Mexico man charged with killing his family

December 3, 2019

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) — A jury trial for a New Mexico man charged with the shooting deaths of his wife and four daughters has been scheduled for early next year.

The Roswell Daily Record reported 38-year-old Juan David Villegas-Hernandez is scheduled to go on trial in Roswell district court beginning Feb. 18.

Villegas-Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to five counts of first-degree murder and four counts of intentional abuse of a child resulting in death.

Authorities say Villegas-Hernandez shot his 34-year-old wife Cynthia Villegas and their four daughters aged 14, 11, 7, and 3 inside the family’s home in June 2016.

Police arrested Villegas-Hernandez in northwest Mexico days later and he was extradited to New Mexico in March 2017.

Court records say the trial has been postponed several times.
