SuperSonics 122, Raptors 78
SEATTLE (AP) _ Sam Perkins tied an NBA record by going 8-for-8 from 3-point range and the Seattle SuperSonics set a league record with 27 steals in a 122-78 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.
Perkins, who had 26 points, tied the record for most 3-pointers without a miss set by Jeff Hornacek of Utah on Nov. 23, 1994, against Seattle.
The Sonics’ 27 steals broke the mark of 25 set by Golden State twice _ in 1975 and 1989. Seattle also set a club record with 15 3-pointers.
Shawn Kemp had 25 points and 12 rebounds, Hersey Hawkins added 21 points and four 3-pointers, and Gary Payton contributed 15 points, 10 assists and three steals as the Sonics won their sixth straight game in January after going 7-8 in December _ their first losing month under coach George Karl.
The Raptors were led by 15 points each from Doug Christie and Carlos Rogers.
Perkins shot 6-for-6 on 3-pointers in the first half, made his seventh with 8:24 left in the fourth and his eighth with 5:21 left. He played the rest of the game but did not take another shot.
The Sonics connected on 15 of 26 3-pointers to break the club mark of 14 set March 18, 1995, against Detroit.
Toronto set a franchise record with 32 turnovers. The Raptors had 29 twice last season. Eleven different Sonics had steals, led by Greg Graham and Craig Ehlo, who both sat out the first three quarters, with four each.
Terry Cummings, 35, made his debut for the Sonics after being signed as a free agent this week. He scored two points on 1-for-6 shooting in 14 minutes.
The game seemed to be more or less over at halftime, but Toronto cut the Sonics’ lead to 62-41 by scoring the first six baskets of the second half. The Sonics then went on a 17-4 run that included consecutive 3-pointers by Hawkins for a 79-45 lead.
The Sonics led 62-35 at halftime after scoring 17 unanswered points in the final 3:53 of the second quarter.
After Walt Williams’ fast break layup cut Seattle’s lead to 45-35, the Sonics got 3-pointers from Payton, Perkins and Hawkins during their 17-0 run.
