Fort Bend area schedule filled with playoff implications

October 29, 2018 GMT

The playoff races are getting tight on Fort Bend area gridirons, though some are already assured of playoff spots.

Ridge Point continues to lead District 20-6A and is a assured of a postseason berth after a 35-6 win against Elkins.

Marshall had the week off but still punched its playoff ticket, as none of the bottom five teams in District 11-5A Division II can catch the 8-0 Buffalos.

But there are several games this week which will affect the playoff hunt in area districts, perhaps altering the standings entering the final week.

Dulles vs. Elkins: Both teams defeated Bush with somewhat surprising ease in the past two weeks, setting up a chance for either to clinch a playoff spot. Dulles (4-1) can seal its first playoff berth in six years, while Elkins (3-2) moves in on a postseason bid in its return to Class 6A.

Hastings vs. Dawson: These teams met for the District 23-6A title last year. Now they are fighting for their postseason hopes. Hastings (2-3) is suddenly on a three-game losing streak after a strong start, including a loss to rival Alief Taylor, which the Eagles (3-2) defeated last week. A win leaves the Bears in good shape with Brazoswood to close the season and two key head-to-head tiebreakers. Dawson is in with a win.

Terry vs. Friendswood: Both are 2-3 and tied for fifth place in District 10-5A Division I, so the loser might be out of the playoff picture. Terry faces an uphill climb with the Mustangs and undefeated Shadow Creek remaining. But if the Rangers squad that defeated Hightower and played Bush, Lamar Consolidated and Angleton within a total of 10 points, anything can happen.

Needville vs. Brazosport: One year ago, the Blue Jays had a chance to clinch a playoff spot against Brazosport, only to fall 63-34 and have another district result leave them at home for the postseason. Needville can punch its playoff ticket this week, set up by a thrilling rally against Fulshear. A loss would put the Blue Jays in a possible must-win game against undefeated Sealy.

Strake Jesuit vs. George Ranch: The Crusaders bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 62-0 rout of Brazoswood, all but clinching a playoff spot at 4-1. But it is not quite in the bag. George Ranch is 3-2 with the most difficult closing stretch in 23-6A. The Longhorns, who have defeated Brazoswood, Alief Taylor and Elsik, might want to avoid a must-win against unbeaten Pearland in Week 11.

Willowridge vs. Manvel: This will most likely decide the No. 2 seed in 11-5A Division II, as both teams are 5-1 and a game behind Marshall. The Eagles are one win from clinching their second playoff berth in three years, be it against the Mavericks or in Week 11 against Sterling.

Trey Larsen, Fort Bend Austin

Turns out Larsen was just warming up last week. He led the Bulldogs to a 49-42 victory against Kempner, completing 16 of 24 passes for six touchdowns, the last to Troy Omeire with 2:25 left. Moises Tezzo added 248 yards from scrimmage and two scores.

Mason McBride, Ridge Point

The Panthers moved closer to their fifth straight district title with a 35-7 win against Elkins on the strength of three touchdowns by McBride, who gained 95 yards on 20 carries. John Paul Richardson added 107 yards and two touchdowns receiving.

Jayren Miller, George Ranch

Miller carried 18 times for 131 yards and two touchdowns and even completed all four of his pass attempts in a 35-6 victory against Elsik. The Longhorns allowed a season-low in scoring on defense.

Jordan Shelton, Kempner

Shelton achieved a rare 400-yard game to lead the Cougars back from a 28-0 deficit against Fort Bend Austin. He finished with a jaw-dropping 412 yards and six touchdowns on 40 carries, scoring on runs of 49, 37, 26, 39, 39 and 14 yards.

Konnor Sheppard, Dulles

Sheppard made many of the big defensive plays in the Vikings’ key 45-13 victory against Bush, recovering three fumbles while making two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. Javian Myles led the offense with 136 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, with Cameron Peters scoring twice on the ground.

Floyd Vitatoe, Willowridge

Vitatoe collected nine tackles and a fumble recovery to lead a smothering defensive effort that held Milby to less than 100 yards in a 50-6 rout. Vaughnte Frederick passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two more, while JhamarKus Harris added 120 yards and a touchdown.

Tu’Shawn Wilson, Stafford

Wilson’s 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter stood out in a defensive battle in which neither team topped 250 yards. He had another touchdown run in a 21-15 victory against Furr to keep the Spartans in the playoff race.
