Girls hockey: Lourdes finishes 6th at state
ST. PAUL – The result wasn’t as important to Rochester Lourdes as was the fact that they were there.
The Eagles’ girls hockey team closed a tremendous 2018-19 season on Saturday with a 4-2 loss to Fergus Falls at Tria Rink in the Class A state tournament fifth-place game. Lourdes reached the state tournament in just its second season as a solo varsity program.
While the loss brings to an end the high school careers of five seniors, Lourdes accomplished one of its biggest goals heading into this season: Winning the Section 1A championship and reaching state.
Junior forward Emma Schmitz, who was named to the All-State Tournament Team, scored both of Lourdes’ goals against Fergus Falls. She gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead 8:18 into the game, then scored again at 8:12 of the second period for a 2-1 lead.
But the Otters answered 17 seconds after Schmitz’s second goal, tying the score on the first of two goals from Jade Zierden, whose second goal came with 18 seconds to go in the second period and held up as the game winner.
Fergus Falls added an insurance goal with 1:43 to play in the game.
Corrin Hanson stopped 23 shots for Lourdes, which was outshot 27-18.
Lourdes closes its season with a 16-11-1 record and will lose five talented seniors to graduation, including second-leading scorer Clara Billings (34-16—50), forward Natalie Kielty, and defensemen Ali Ratzloff, Paige McPeak and Victoria Dettinger.
