Voice of the people: Group opposes Dwight proposal
Bloomington Normal Democratic Socialists of America stand in solidarity with #NOICEDwight in opposing the construction of a detention center in Dwight.
We strongly oppose that the economy of central Illinois should be built off the backs of the most vulnerable among us. Bloomington Normal Democratic Socialists of America members joined more than 100 neighbors and organizations at the zoning meeting and village board meetings in Dwight. We left unconvinced that Immigration Centers of America will do what they promise: create more than 240 “well-paying” jobs in Dwight.
The opposite is more likely. ICA has a reputation of being terrible employer: high turnover, employee trauma, no pension and low wages. Further, there is no promise of a Project Labor Agreement to build the facility. We condemn ICE’s dehumanizing tactics, including detainment, family separation and deportation of immigrants, and believe the abolition of ICE is necessary for a more just and democratic world.
While corporations are able to cross borders freely, children and workers are brutalized and imprisoned for doing the same. We believe no person is illegal and stand beside our immigrant brothers and sisters. We pledge our support to fight for guaranteed living wages and health care for all so Dwight residents will no longer be forced to choose between precarious employment and moral decency. We implore our neighbors to join this movement of dignity for all.
