Claire Galofaro has been documenting the struggles in rural America since joining The Associated Press in 2015. Her stories have explored the nation’s spiraling opioid epidemic, the repercussions of rural poverty and government dependency, and how the decimation of small-town America gave way to the rise of President Donald Trump. Galofaro, based in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, was awarded the Livingston Award for Young Journalists this year for her reporting on Appalachia after the collapse of the coal industry.
