Serena Williams had just won her seventh Wimbledon title when she raised her fist into a black power salute, months before any other major athlete took such a strong public stance on the deaths of black men at the hands of police. “I won’t be silent,” she said on Facebook. Williams has been a presence on and off the tennis court, not shying away from opponents en route to winning 23 Grand Slam titles or social and political issues.
