Manufactured tweet attributed to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

September 5, 2019 GMT

CLAIM: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Aug. 30: “I see people are rushing out to fill up their cars for this hurricane at the gas station. This wouldn’t be an issue if they had electric cars. If the power is out for a week, how are they going to get gas? We need to start planning ahead and moving forward.”

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The fabricated Twitter post falsely attributed to Ocasio-Cortez was shared on social media platforms as Hurricane Dorian gained strength off Florida.

THE FACTS: The fabricated tweet circulated widely last week on Facebook and Twitter. VineSight, a group which tracks viral misinformation, found it had been retweeted more than 20,000 times.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York who is chief House author of the Green New Deal to address climate change, addressed the false tweet on Aug. 31 after former White House aide Sebastian Gorka asked on Twitter if she had posted it.

“Nope,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in response .

The Green New Deal seeks to shift the U.S. away from fossil fuels such as oil and coal and replace them with renewable energy sources. It calls for virtual elimination of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming by 2030

A search of Ocasio-Cortez’s tweets on internet archiving sites on Aug. 30 found no such tweet. A scan of Politwoops, a Propublica database that archives deleted tweets, also shows that Ocasio-Cortez did not delete any tweets that mention of electric cars and the hurricane.

A spokesperson for the representative referred The Associated Press to Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet when asked for comment.
