MOSCOW (AP) — Amateur boxing faces a breakaway threat ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after its international federation elected a president accused of ties to organized crime.
The federation, known as AIBA, says a "rogue group" led by unnamed "Kazakhstani individuals" has asked national boxing federations to write to the International Olympic Committee offering to help run an Olympic boxing tournament without AIBA.
Canelo Alvarez to fight Daniel Jacobs May 4 in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs will meet May 4 in a middleweight title unification fight in Las Vegas.
Promoters announced Wednesday that Alvarez, the Mexican star who beat Gennady Golovkin in September, will fight Jacobs in a scheduled 12-round fight at the T-Mobile Arena to unify most of the major middleweight titles. The fight will be aired on the streaming service DAZN, which recently signed Alvarez to a long-term deal.

IOC warns Olympic boxing in deeper trouble than AIBA claims
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The IOC has told Olympic bodies not to trust a recent claim by the president of amateur boxing's governing body that the sport's worst problems are over.
Writing to 206 national Olympic bodies, the IOC says a Dec. 5 letter from AIBA president Gafur Rakhimov to boxing officials is "likely to cause confusion."
The IOC says Rakhimov's letter "does not at all provide an accurate portrayal" of its decisions affecting AIBA.
