September 16, 2016 GMT

OMAHA — It was a tough day for the Columbus High boys tennis team Thursday at the Millard North Invite.

Two positions went winless in pool play and Matt Hoenk was forced to withdraw after starting his tournament with a 1-1 record.

The Discoverers finished ninth out of 10 teams with 16 points. The host school won the team title with 58 points.

But there were bright spots for CHS.

Brady Miller and Trey Rinkol went 3-2 on the day to finish fourth at No. 2 doubles. After going 0-4 in pool play, both Jesse Osborn at No. 1 singles and Alex Uhlig and Eric Hanzel at No. 1 doubles came back to win their final matches.

Rinkol and Miller dropped their opening match 8-1 to Sam Brown and Owen Wostoupal of Millard West, but came back with three straight victories after that. The pair defeated Omaha Westside’s Michael Beaulieu and Neil Novak 8-4, Omaha Burke’s Colby Watkins and Arman Moussaui 8-3 and Millard South’s Drew Plum and Ethan Warner 8-4 to advance to the third-place match.

The CHS duo fell 8-2 to Tom Loseke and Tate Brudigan of Papillion-La Vista in their final match.

Osborn beat Omaha North’s Michael Winn 8-1 to finish ninth and Hanzel and Uhlig defeated Omaha North tennis players Brandon Gulick and Uziel Ramos to match Osborn’s finish.

Hoenk lost his first match 8-1 to Garret Starman of Millard North and beat Noe Garza of Norfolk 8-2 before withdrawing.

The Discoverers will be back in the Omaha metro Monday at the Papillion-La Vista Invite.
