Ex-Miss America Files for Divorce

December 9, 1997 GMT

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Phyllis George Brown had a year and a half to think about a reconciliation with her husband of 18 years. She decided on divorce.

Miss America 1971 filed for divorce from former Kentucky Gov. John Y. Brown Jr. on Nov. 10 in Broward County Circuit Court, claiming he has permanent resident status in Florida.

Brown is awaiting a judge’s ruling on whether the case should instead be heard in Lexington, Ky., claiming he is no longer a Florida resident, according to his attorney, Robert Moraitis. Ms. Brown should not be allowed to ``forum shop″ for a more favorable divorce state, Moraitis said Monday.

The former CBS broadcaster, who originally filed for divorce in 1996 before the couple sought a reconciliation, is seeking custody of the couple’s two teen-age children, immediate relief support and an unspecified amount of alimony, according to her Miami attorneys, Mitchell Karpf and Burton Young.

Brown wants joint custody and claims his wife can support herself.

Brown is a millionaire entrepreneur who helped build Kentucky Fried Chicken and recently sold his interest in Kenny Rogers’ Roasters, which Brown founded in 1991 with the entertainer.
