Actor Brosnan’s Son in Car Accident
MALIBU, Calif. (AP) _ Actor Pierce Brosnan’s 13-year-old son was in a car that plunged 150-200 feet down a steep embankment early Saturday, leaving him with multiple fractures and spinal injuries, authorities said.
Alcohol was a factor in the crash, police said.
Sean Brosnan suffered multiple fractures and spinal injuries when the vehicle went down a brush-covered embankment near Malibu, the California Highway Patrol said.
Brosnan was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, authorities said.
Pierce Brosnan, best known as the latest actor to play James Bond, was contacted at his home in Malibu shortly after the accident and accompanied his son in the helicopter, the CHP said.
CHP Officer Karen Faciane said Brosnan was being treated for a fractured pelvis, a possible fracture to a vertebra and a ruptured bladder. She said he was recovering in the intensive care unit and was in stable but serious condition.
Hospital spokeswoman Roxanne Moster said the hospital did not have any patient listed under Brosnan’s name.
The 1982 Chevrolet Blazer was carrying six people when it went off Dume Mountain Way near Malibu at about 3:45 a.m., the CHP said.
The driver, James Hall, 19, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing major injuries.
Hall told authorities he swerved to avoid a large rock and went off the road.
``The initial investigation indicates that in addition to the driver, several of the passengers had been consuming alcoholic beverages,″ the CHP said.
The CHP said some passengers were not wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicle. Several passengers with minor injuries hiked back up to the roadway and used a cellular telephone to call for help.
