Riot Leaves $40,000 in Damage
BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) _ Gov. George Mickelson said Monday he was saddened by the weekend rampage of a crowd that did $40,000 worth damage during the South Dakota State University homecoming.
More than 50 people were arrested, and four faced felony charges in connection with overturning a car belonging to Sioux Falls station KSFY-TV.
″I’m very disappointed that what I know of now to be a small group of perpetrators and a large group of onlookers did as much damage,″ Mickelson said.
An estimated $30,000 damage was done at SDSU, and off-campus damage may total $10,000, officials said.
The damage occurred Friday night and Saturday night during the Hobo Day homecoming weekend at the 7,000-student, state-supported school.
Several hundred people marched across campus toward downtown Saturday, tearing down signs and light poles. Three fires were started near the campus, and some students pelted authorities with eggs and beer bottles when they responded to the fires.
Two people suffered minor injuries.
