Shaheen, Hassan, call for special counsel after FBI firing
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan are calling for a special prosecutor to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election, now that President Donald Trump has fired the head of the FBI.
Shaheen calls the decision to fire James Comey very disturbing “and opens a Pandora’s box of additional questions regarding the ongoing investigation” into the election.
Hassan said it is essential that the next FBI director be able to demonstrate true independence from the political influence of the Trump administration.
In his brief letter Tuesday to Comey, Trump said the firing was necessary to restore “public trust and confidence” in the FBI. The administration paired the letter with a scathing review by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein of how Comey handled the investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s email practices.
