Naomi Campbell Guilty of Assault
TORONTO (AP) _ Supermodel Naomi Campbell pleaded guilty Wednesday to an assault charge for beating her assistant while making a film in Canada in 1998.
The 29-year-old Campbell did not attend the court hearing, and her plea was entered by her lawyer, Brian Greenspan. Under an agreement worked out with the prosecution, she expressed remorse for the attack and was released without punishment or a criminal record.
An assault conviction can bring up to six months in prison or a $1,370 fine.
``It was a just disposition,″ prosecutor Calvin Barry said.
Campbell admitted beating assistant Georgina Galanis while in Toronto filming the movie, ``Prisoner of Love.″
Galanis, 39, briefly worked as Campbell’s assistant during filming. She has filed a $2 million lawsuit against Campbell in New York that mentions the alleged assault in Toronto.
Galanis, who is from the New York City borough of Queens, said in the lawsuit that she worked for Campbell for nine days. She said Campbell hit her twice in the head with a telephone, punched her shoulder twice, grabbed her neck and violently shook her head.
Campbell previously denied the accusations.
