PHOENIX (AP) — A 28-year-old man has been arrested in the shooting death of Lance McDowell, a player for the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League, police said Tuesday.

Christopher Verland Ayers III was already jailed on unrelated charges when he was rebooked Monday on suspicion of second-degree murder in the Dec. 20 killing of McDowdell.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a police spokesman, said investigators hadn’t determined a motive for the killing.

McDowdell was found shot in an apartment complex parking lot.

Rick Tosto, an attorney representing Ayers in the already pending case, said he didn’t know about his client’s new arrest and couldn’t comment.

Charges in the previous case include armed robbery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault causing temporary disfigurement.

Evidence cited by police in a probable-cause statement in the homicide case included using cellphone tracking to place Ayers in the area when McDowdell was killed and finding Ayersr’ fingerprints on a gun that shell casings indicated was used in the killing.

The gun was found under a parked truck on a business property near where police spotted Ayers walking in a neighborhood after locating a car that fled from police during a traffic stop soon after the killing, the statement said.
