Work To Reopen W-B Bridge To Begin This Year

March 2, 2018 GMT

Work to reopen the North Washington Street Bridge in Wilkes-Barre will begin this year. The bridge in the North End section has been closed since 2013 due to structural issues, but field scoping of the project is set for late spring/early summer, city officials announced Thursday. Since the closure, signs and barriers have restricted access to the bridge between Pennsylvania Avenue and East Chestnut Street. The city plans to hire Alfred Benesch and Company to begin preliminary engineering and design work once the testing is complete, according to a press release from Mayor Tony George’s office. The company will also conduct annual bridge inspections through the city, the release states. The bridge was originally scheduled for review in 2021. — STAFF REPORT
