71 Students Treated After Army’s Tear Gas Drifts Into School Yard
HONOLULU (AP) _ Tear gas drifted from an Army training field into a nearby school yard Thursday, causing 71 students to seek treatment for eye irritation, breathing troubles and nausea.
The students were treated at hospitals and clinics after being stricken at the Wahiawa Intermediate School.
The fumes came from a single gas grenade that exploded in the morning during routine training just over a half-mile from the school, which is adjacent to the Schofield Barracks East Range.
Southerly winds blew the fumes into the school yard, Army spokeswoman Julie Ewart said. The school was to reopen Friday.
