Man charged in crash that killed 2 people
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man ran a red light and caused a crash that left two other people dead shortly after fleeing from police on Monday, authorities said.
Travon Mitchell, 29, was booked early Tuesday into the Palm Beach County Jail, the Palm Beach Post reported. He’s been charged with fleeing police, reckless driving, driving without a license and drug possession.
Two West Palm Beach police officers said they spotted Mitchell’s car speeding through the parking lot of the Palm Beach Outlets about 20 minutes before the crash. A report said the car drove straight at the officers several times, forcing them to brake to avoid collisions. Mitchell’s car eventually sped away, and the officers didn’t pursue.
Several miles to the south, Mitchell ran a red light and slammed into the passenger side of another car, officials said. Driver Alejandro Garcia Suarez, 18, and passenger Denia Mena Canto, 45, died at the scene, police said.
Mitchell was being held on $6,000 bond. Jail records didn’t list an attorney.
