Explosion at Smelter Kills One Worker, Injures 10 Others

September 30, 1986 GMT

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) _ A furnace at an aluminun smelting plant exploded today and sprayed tons of molten metal into the air, killing one worker and injuring 10 others, a factory official said.

Five of the men showered with the liquified aluminum suffered critical burns, said Paul Robinson, general manager of Simsmetal Ltd. The condition of the other five injured workers was not immediately known.

Robinson said the plant’s rotary furnace exploded at 10 a.m., wrecking the factory and spewing 4 1/2 tons of molten metal up to 130 feet into the air.

Melbourne firefighters said it could take two days for the hot metal to cool.

The cause of the blast was under investigation.
