SALEM, Mass. (AP) — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has awarded a $20,000 grant to a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the coastal waters and marine habitats of Salem Sound.

Salem Sound Coastwatch will use the grant to fund its environmental education project, Called “STEAMing Ahead in Our Watershed.” The project is designed to give local underserved students a better understanding of ocean literacy and environmental stewardship through hands-on engagement in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

The awards to local community organizations are part of an out-of-school education program that pairs students with field experts to participate in outdoor studies to care for local watersheds and promote local environmental protection.
