Antoine Walker Settles Civil Lawsuit

March 7, 2000 GMT

BOSTON (AP) _ Boston Celtics captain Antoine Walker has settled a court case with a woman who claimed he failed to prevent three of his friends from raping her at his home.

Terms of the settlement with the unidentified woman were not disclosed in papers filed Monday in U.S. District Court.

The woman claimed she was raped by former Celtics Ron Mercer and Chauncey Billups, both of whom settled lawsuits with her in December.

She also accused Walker’s roommate, Michael Irvin, of taking part in the attack. A lawsuit is still pending against Irvin, who is no relation to the NFL player by the same name.

The group had been together at a Boston comedy club on Nov. 9, 1997 and then returned to Walker’s Waltham condominium. The woman said Walker walked in on the attack but failed to stop it.

A Middlesex County grand jury investigated the case but did not bring criminal charges.

A District Court judge dismissed the suit in 1998, ruling that it wasn’t clear Walker knew the woman was being assaulted and that he had no obligation under state law to stop the attack.

The U.S. 1st First Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the case against Walker in October.
