Wrong-way driver causes deadly crash on I-17 outside Phoenix
PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities are searching for a wrong-way driver who caused a fatal car wreck north of Phoenix.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say the incident happened early Monday around 12:30 a.m. on Interstate 17 about 55 miles (89 kilometers) outside of Phoenix.
Calls came in reporting a driver heading south in the northbound lanes near the Sunset Point overlook.
Witnesses say a car avoiding the wrong-way vehicle hit an embankment in the median. A third car hit the vehicle on the embankment.
DPS says the driver in the car that hit the embankment was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not life-threatening.
