Popularity grows over years
By 1956, 80 percent of U.S. households had a refrigerator. By 2005, that number rose to 99.5 percent. Some 15 percent of American households have two refrigerators.

A refrigerator spends about 10 percent of the total electricity used in a common household. A refrigerator is more efficient if it has more items in it.
