Nov. 15 (Wednesday this year) has been designated as “Clean out Your Refrigerator Day” in the United States. It was invented by Whirlpool Home Appliances as a promotional tool.

Popularity grows over years

By 1956, 80 percent of U.S. households had a refrigerator. By 2005, that number rose to 99.5 percent. Some 15 percent of American households have two refrigerators.

A refrigerator spends about 10 percent of the total electricity used in a common household. A refrigerator is more efficient if it has more items in it.

More than 8 million refrigerators are sold each year in the United States.
