Brother of abused patient offers to settle suit for $36M
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The brother of a man abused by staff at a Connecticut maximum-security psychiatric hospital has offered to settle his lawsuit against the state for $36 million.
An attorney for Al Shehadi tells the Hartford Courant the $36 million would compensate “for the hundreds of incidents of torture and abuse,” many of which were caught on surveillance video.
Shehadi’s brother, William Shehadi, was abused by staff at the Whiting Forensic Hospital in Middletown. Ten staffers were arrested on cruelty charges and a supervisory nurse was sentenced to five years in prison.
The abuse led to legislative hearings, management changes and a task force that is considering deeper reforms, including shutting down the state-run facility.
The state has said it is immune from liability. A message was left with the state attorney general’s office.
