Teacher At Reservation School Abused 142, FBI Says
PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) _ A grade-school teacher on the Hopi Indian Reservation is accused in an FBI affidavit of engaging in sexual activities and nude photography with 142 victims, apparently Indian boys.
John W. Boone, 34, was charged Wednesday in U.S. District Court with molesting an 11-year-old boy on the reservation in May. Boone was arrested Tuesday after a weeklong investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
U.S. Magistrate Morton Sitver ordered Boone held pending a bail hearing Tuesday.
The boy alleged that during a visit to Boone’s apartment next to Polacca Day School on the reservation, the teacher molested him while the boy was playing video games.
In a search of the apartment Tuesday, agents found a chart that indicated its author had touched the boy’s genitals, the FBI affidavit said.
″This document also reflects the author’s sexual activity with 141 other named persons who appear to be Indian juveniles,″ the affidavit said. ″Additionally, numerous photographic negatives were seized which contained nude pictures of what appears to be Indian children.″
Boone admitted that he wrote the chart, the affidavit said.
″We found a chart the defendant had made, listing the children and what he did to them,″ Roger Dokken, an assistant U.S. attorney, told Sitver in Wednesday’s hearing. He also said videotapes were seized from Boone’s apartment.
Before his court appearance, Boone told a reporter that he had not been involved in sexual activities with 142 boys.
″That’s just not right. I didn’t,″ Boone said.
His court-appointed attorney, Mary Wisdom, declined comment.
Paul White, principal at Polacca Day School since October 1985, said that rumors about Boone had circulated for years, but investigations by the Coconino and Navajo county sheriff’s departments did not find any problem.
″So I just watched,″ White said. ″I talked to kids. I talked to the students that he handled, and at no time did anybody ever indicate anything other than going over to watch TV or videos.″
White said Boone has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.
