Vermont elementary school gets grant to encourage reading
BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A literacy grant is going to help continue a daily reading program at Monument Elementary School in Bennington.
The $1,000 grant from Vermont Reading Partners, a Manchester-based non-profit organization, will be used to replenish books for the school’s Partners in Reading program.
The Bennington Banner reports Partners in Reading is a daily program for kindergartners through third-graders that has a goal of cultivating a daily reading habit by providing families regular access to books.
Monument Elementary Principal Donna Cauley says students take a book home each evening, to read with family or guardians.
Cauley says it fosters a love of learning and reading, not only in schools, but also at home.
The grant will help the school buy new books for the program.
