NEW YORK (AP) _ Stephen E. Smith, who managed brother-in-law John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign, died Sunday in his Manhattan home after a long illness. He was 62.

Smith, who was married to the former Jean Kennedy, also ran several family businesses and advised the family on financial matters and political campaigns, said Eddie Martin, a spokesman for Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.

″For 34 years, from the day he married Jean, Steve was like a brother in our family. He was the wisest adviser, the most skillful campaign manager, and the best friend that any of us ever had,″ the senator said through his spokesman. ″There wouldn’t have been a Camelot without Steve Smith.″

The spokesman who released news of the death did not give a cause.

Smith’s survivors include his wife and his four children, William, Stephen Jr., Amanda and Kym, all of whom were with him when he died, Martin said.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas More’s Church.

Viewing will be from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel.
