NY AG candidate Teachout gets Ocasio-Cortez endorsement
NEW YORK (AP) — Newly-minted Democratic star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday endorsed Zephyr Teachout for New York State Attorney General in front of Wall Street’s Charging Bull statue.
Both candidates spoke of the need to clean up politics in the state to benefit the working class.
“I am extremely proud to endorse the only candidate for Attorney General that is rejecting money, corporate money in the state of New York,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Ocasio-Cortez’s upset victory over 10-term incumbent Joseph Crowley in the Democratic primary launched her into the national spotlight last month.
“She shot a bolt of electricity through New York state and through this country,” Teachout said.
Teachout promised that if elected she would investigate Donald Trump and the Trump Foundation. She criticized Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for not giving interim attorney general Barbara Underwood the authorization to criminally investigate the Trump Foundation.
Teachout also promised to investigate sexual misconduct and allegations of rape in New York’s statehouse.
She faces New York City Public Advocate Tish James in the Democratic primary in September. James has the endorsement of the state’s Democratic Party as well as Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Manhattan lawyer Keith Wofford is the Republican candidate.
Democrat Attorney General Eric Schneiderman resigned after women he had dated accused him of abuse. He denies the allegations.
