Lawmakers approve $25 million for new Capitol tunnel

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia lawmakers are set to approve $25 million in bonds to build a new tunnel between the state Capitol and a nearby legislative office building currently under construction.

The new funding for the tunnel was included in a proposed budget unveiled Monday, which lawmakers are set to vote on Thursday.

Republican Sen. Emmett Hanger said lawmakers believed it was an opportune time to approve funding for the tunnel while construction of the new office building is underway.

Hanger said a tunnel would make it easier for the general public to get around Capitol Square without having to go through multiple security checkpoints.
