Eastern Shoshone Tribe files lawsuit against opioid makers
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — The Eastern Shoshone Tribe in Wyoming has joined a growing list of municipalities and groups nationwide in suing the makers and distributers of prescription painkillers.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports the tribe announced Tuesday it had filed a federal lawsuit against two dozen companies, claiming they used deceptive marketing to convince doctors to prescribe opioids for treatment of chronic pain.
The tribe says the opioid crisis has caused substantial increases in child welfare and social service costs.
The lawsuit notes the opioid crisis has disproportionately affected Native Americans.
The lawsuit is similar to those filed by other Wyoming entities, including the city of Casper and the Northern Arapaho Tribe.
