Cooper, Cabinet members check on NC barrier island recovery

September 23, 2019 GMT

OCRACOKE, N.C. (AP) — Gov. Roy Cooper and other top leaders in his administration have toured cleanup efforts on the barrier island that suffered the most damage in North Carolina from Hurricane Dorian.

Cooper’s office said the governor, three Cabinet members and emergency officials visited Ocracoke Island on Monday.

They went to a temporary medical center and volunteer fire department, and also met volunteers and people whose homes were damaged by Dorian’s rains and storm surge 2½ weeks ago. Ocracoke access is still limited to residents, homeowners and some others.

Cooper says in a news release that he’s pushing for federal assistance above and beyond what state resources are being offered to help Ocracoke residents.

This was Cooper’s second visit to Ocracoke since Dorian departed the North Carolina coast on Sept. 6.
