Report: Boy Says He Bludgeoned, Stabbed Family Members to Death

February 5, 1996 GMT

VISTA, Calif. (AP) _ A teen-ager told authorities he fatally stabbed and bludgeoned his parents and grandparents and then took his sister shopping for an ax, which he used to kill her, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported today.

Joshua Bradley Jenkins, 15, told police he killed the adults on Friday, killed his sister on Saturday and then dragged all five bodies into a bedroom of his grandparents’ condominium, sources told the newspaper.

He set at least three fires and fled in his parents silver Mercedes-Benz, police said. The bodies were discovered by firefighters.

The weapons used in the slayings were found in the condominium, Lt. Jerry Lipscomb said. The weapons were not identified. There did not appear to be signs of a struggle.

Autopsies were to be performed today.

Police had asked for the public’s help in finding the car, which was seen speeding away from Saturday’s fire. A convenience store clerk called police early Sunday morning after spotting Jenkins filling the tires with air.

Jenkins was arrested, unarmed, about a half mile away and booked for investigation of murder.

While police didn’t discuss a motive, the family’s neighbor told the newspaper the boy had emotional problems and had difficulty accepting the fact that he was adopted. The neighbor also said the teen had been sent to a private school in Los Angeles County because of the emotional problems.

The neighbor said the family told him Jenkins had threatened them before. ``They were afraid for their own lives,″ said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified.

The condominium is in a quiet, gated community known as ``The Terraces″ 40 miles northeast of San Diego.

The victims have been identified as Jenkins’ parents, George Jenkins, 50, and Lynn Jenkins, 48, of Las Vegas; his grandparents, Bill Grossman, 78, and Eileen Grossman, 74, of Vista; and his sister, Megan Jenkins, 10.
