LOWELL -- A high-scoring defenseman from Canada has committed to the UMass Lowell hockey program.

Ben Brunette, 17, was named the top defenseman in the Great North Midget League after a breakthrough season. The 5-foot-11, 155-pound Brunette compiled 54 points in 36 regular-season games before adding six points in six playoff games for the North Bay Trappers.

A native of North Bay, Ont., Brunette tied for eighth in scoring and was by far the leading-scoring defenseman in his league.

He’s expected to play for Carleton Place of the CCHL next season and may not arrive at UML until the 2021-22 season.

Brunette’s exploits have not gone unnoticed. He was recently taken in the second round of the Ontario Hockey League draft.
