Jackson district sets longer school days for older students

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Starting this fall, older students will have slightly longer school days in Mississippi’s second-largest district.

Jackson Public Schools is making the change so it will have more flexibility in case schools close for bad weather or other emergencies.

The Clarion Ledger reports that middle school students will have an extra 25 minutes and high school students will have an extra 15 minutes on campus each day.

The district was forced to cancel seven straight days of classes in January because of winter weather and poor water pressure. Schools reopened the next week but students had to be released early because of water problems.

The district says with the new schedule, it will be able to waive two school days in either semester if the governor declares a state of emergency.
