Yoko Ono: Honored To Be Dragon Lady

October 15, 2000 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) _ Yoko Ono has been disparagingly called a dragon lady by John Lennon fans who blamed her for the breakup of The Beatles.

But over the years, Ono has learned to take the insult in stride.

``I’m kind of honored to be a dragon lady,″ she said in Sunday’s edition of Newsday. ``The dragon is a very powerful, mythical animal _ well, probably they think I’m powerful, thank you very much.″

Ono’s legacy as an artist will be examined starting this week with a new exhibit at the Japan Society in New York. Lennon once called her the world’s ``most famous unknown artist.″

The exhibit shows the different forms of art that Ono has dabbled in, including film and paintings.

``I have a very mercurial character as an artist, and I can’t keep repeating one pattern,″ she said. ``I’ll be doing something, and then I get a totally different idea and jump to that.″
